Abdelkader Benchamma: Landscape of the fall
Between 1984 and 1987, the Gouvernementshuis, originally a Jesuit monastery, was restored in the elegant 18th-century classical style. At the same time, a modern extension was added. This new section was designed with several components, focusing on the museum’s lush garden.
Engaging and Dynamic
Abdelkader Benchamma, a French artist born in 1975, has developed a unique approach to drawing. He works with black ink on large surfaces, such as walls and ceilings, creating dynamic and immersive works. His art strikes a balance between intricate detail and spontaneity, drawing inspiration from science, mythology, and the relationship between humanity and nature. Benchamma’s work often explores themes like collective memory and humanity’s place in the universe.
Powerful and ImpressiveHis creations are not just visually stunning but also interactive, inviting viewers to step into his macro- and microcosmic worlds. In his recent exhibition Solastalgia: Archaeologies of Loss, he explored the human impact on nature, inspired by alchemy and ancient traditions. His drawing style highlights the connection between individuals, history, and the universe.

The Noordbrabants Museum
Abdelkader Benchamma’s exhibition at the Noordbrabants Museum, titled Landscape of the Fall, is exceptional because it links his art to historical masterpieces by followers of Jheronimus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel. His large wall drawings blend seamlessly with classic paintings, such as The Temptation of Saint Anthony, creating a dynamic dialogue between old and new art. This approach makes his work timeless and captivating.
Favourite work of art
My mother and I love creating and designing clothes: the movement, textures, and patterns in textiles are such a source of inspiration. Imagining a couture piece with fabrics designed by Abdelkader Benchamma would be a dream. His dynamic brushstrokes and flowing ink patterns could translate beautifully into fabric, bringing an artistic and expressive dimension to fashion. It would be incredible to see his unique visual language interpreted in wearable art.
Would you like to wear a design created especially for you? A piece filled with your character and personality? Take the first step and get in touch with me, no strings attached. I will listen to your wishes, your story, and your vision for what you’d love to wear. Then, I’ll bring my creativity to the table to design something entirely new that will bring you joy every time you wear it.
Time and Space
Benchamma works intuitively, without strict plans, using black ink to draw directly onto walls. His drawings resemble vibrant, flowing rivers that seem to transcend the boundaries of time and space. The exhibition also includes animations, lithographs, and engravings, reflecting his fascination with cosmic mysteries like black holes and hidden dimensions.
The exhibition runs from 16 November 2024 to 9 March 2025 in ’s-Hertogenbosch. It’s a must-see for fans of both classical and contemporary art.
